"Below Average" Height Celebs with "Well Above Average" Success
This entry was posted on April 20, 2013.
The typical Hollywood A-lister is 6ft+ with a dazzling white smile and a finely honed body - unrepresentative of the rest of the population, but an ideal many men strive for nonetheless. So what about those unconventional Hollywood heart throbs who have found success and fame while looking up to many of their peers? We take a look at some of the most famous men on the planet who have made a success of themselves - with or without those few extra inches…
When first cast as the boy wizard Harry Potter, many people predicted Daniel Radcliffe would go on to feature in Hollywood hits and become the quintessential "leading man". But fully grown at 5ft 5, his path has gone a very different way, and no one could deny that his talent has led him down a fruitful and exhilarating path. Showing his versatility across thrillers, Broadway musicals and indie flicks, Daniel Radcliffe is an example of how height needn’t be a barrier to any kind of success. Now a leading man in his own right, Dan will likely have a more sustained career than some of the six-foot flavour-of-the-month eye-candy men that "make it" in Hollywood.
Robert Downey Jnr
With roles as superheroes and famous detectives under his belt in recent years, you may be forgiven for thinking that Robert Downey Jnr was a quintessential Hollywood hunk. But at 5ft 7inches tall, the man behind Sherlock Holmes and Iron Man series is much shorter than many would first believe. Despite this, his on-screen presence and bigger-than-life performances make him appear a veritable giant of the silver screen. Despite being a way off 6ft, the supposed ideal height for a man, his huge talent has ensured his continued success.
Known for wearing thick heels or elevator shoes "Gorgeous George" is an icon for the shorter man. In his earlier movies he appeared a towering, commanding figure, but in more recent big screen productions and in candid shots, he appears to have shrunk in stature. George Clooney is the epitome of the phrase ‘height doesn’t matter’; many of the world’s most beautiful women have confessed to a crush on George. For this well-dressed silver fox, height has been no hindrance.
Despite falling shy of 6ft, Hollywood A-lister Tom Cruise has featured in some of the most successful films of the generation and dated - and married - some of the most beautiful women in the world. But we also suspect some illusion is afoot - Tom has appeared shorter than former wife Katie Holmes in some shots and taller in others. Was he wearing height increasing shoes?
Danny Devito is another outstanding example. Standing at a mere 5ft, the actor turned director has put his name to leading roles of many big budget hollywood films, going on to produce a few of his own, including cult flick Pulp Fiction.
Of course, when it comes to movies, camera trickery can lead to towering proportions on the big screen. Off-camera, on-hand stylists have likely helped by ensuring these men dress in stylish clothes which complement their height and physique. Also, more than a few of the shorter celebs have been rumoured to wear elevator shoes… We don't know this for sure, but we do know that you can give yourself this height boost. Would you feel more confident with a few extra inches?
